Trade-off
Across the IJ ferry — industrial creative spaces and Amsterdam's lowest prices.
Noord is Amsterdam's creative frontier: a former industrial district transformed by studios, NDSM Wharf, and EYE Film Institute. A free 5-minute ferry from Central Station gets you there. It's not the Amsterdam most visitors imagine but it's genuinely exciting — and accommodation prices are significantly lower than anywhere south of the IJ.

What you gain
- ↑NDSM Wharf — repurposed shipyard with studios, street art, and one of Amsterdam's best flea markets
- ↑EYE Film Institute on the waterfront — genuinely world-class architecture and programming
- ↑Lowest accommodation prices within striking distance of central Amsterdam
What you sacrifice
- ↓Every trip south of the IJ requires a ferry — fine in good weather, inconvenient at night or in rain
- ↓Far from the Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, and the canal ring — the ferry adds time to every museum day
- ↓Less infrastructure for traditional tourism; this is for visitors who know what they're looking for
