Bali
Canggu

Bali's surf and digital nomad capital — rice paddies next to cafés, consistent waves, and a young crowd.
Canggu evolved from a surf village into Bali's most fashionable neighbourhood for long-stay visitors: remote workers with laptops, surfers on Echo Beach, and a café and restaurant scene that improves every year. It retains more of the rice paddy landscape than Seminyak and feels less polished — which is part of its appeal. The surf break at Batu Bolong and Echo Beach is reliable and not overcrowded.

What you gain
- ↑Echo Beach surf: consistent and accessible waves for intermediate surfers; boards and lessons easily arranged
- ↑Best café and co-working scene in Bali; the independent coffee culture here is excellent
- ↑Rice paddy walks between the beach and the cafés: you can still see agricultural Bali from within the neighbourhood
What you sacrifice
- ↓Traffic has worsened considerably — the narrow lanes between Canggu and Seminyak are among Bali's worst
- ↓Genuinely pricey for Bali in the places the expat and tourist crowds have concentrated
- ↓The neighbourhood changes rapidly; what was a rice paddy last year may be a hotel this year
