Trade-off

The medieval fortress on Vågen's north shore plus the suburban island of Askøy across the bridge — local family Bergen.

Bergenhus Fortress at Vågen's north entrance is one of the oldest preserved castles in Norway, with Håkonshallen (13th-century royal hall) and the Rosenkrantz Tower. The fortress hosts the Bergenhus Festning concerts each summer. Askøy, the suburban island across the new Askøybrua bridge, is where many Bergen families live — quieter, lower prices for accommodation, fjord swimming spots like Davanger and Florvågen, and a Bybanen tram extension under construction. Ferry to Strusshamn from the central harbour still runs as a backup.

What you gain

  • Bergenhus Fortress with Håkonshallen (13th-century royal hall)
  • Bergenhus Festning concerts (June-August) — open-air music in the fortress
  • Cheaper accommodation on Askøy with 20-min commute to Bryggen

What you sacrifice

  • Askøy requires bus or driving — bridge can clog in evening rush
  • Suburban Askøy lacks dining scene of central Bergen
