Mitte

Historic Berlin at maximum concentration — Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, and Reichstag all walkable, but tourist density is extreme.
Mitte is the geographic and historic heart of Berlin: Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Museum Island's five world-class museums, the Holocaust Memorial, and Hackescher Markt all within a 20-minute walk. It's the most convenient base in the city by a significant margin — and the least local. The permanent residential population has largely been displaced by tourism and government, leaving a neighbourhood that functions brilliantly for visitors and feels hollow compared to what Berlin actually is.

What you gain
- ↑Pergamon Museum, Neues Museum, and Berliner Dom all within a 10-minute walk — the best museum density of any Berlin neighbourhood
- ↑Reichstag dome (free, advance booking required) and Brandenburg Gate on the doorstep — zero transit required for the headline sights
- ↑Every U-Bahn and S-Bahn line either passes through or connects here — the best transport hub in the city
What you sacrifice
- ↓Most expensive accommodation in Berlin by a significant margin — you pay a premium that often exceeds the quality delivered
- ↓Almost no local life: the restaurants and bars around Hackescher Markt are largely tourist-facing, overpriced relative to Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg
- ↓Crowds on Museum Island in summer are serious — Pergamon tickets require booking weeks ahead and queues still form
