Chengdu
Tianfu Square & People's Park

The geographic centre of Chengdu — Tianfu Square with the giant Mao statue, plus People's Park, the city's favourite outdoor teahouse hangout.
Tianfu Square sits at metro-line interchange 1/2 with the giant white Mao statue facing south. The square itself is more transit hub than tourist site, but it anchors the most local-feeling central neighbourhood. People's Park (Renmin Gongyuan) is the soul of Chengdu — Heming Teahouse under bamboo and old trees has been serving covered-cup tea (gaiwan) at low bamboo chairs since 1923. Locals play mahjong, fan themselves, get noisy ear-cleanings, sing Sichuan opera — daily, all day. The most authentic non-tourist Chengdu experience is just sitting here for 3 hours with a CNY 15 tea.
