Coral Coast Fiji — a traditional Fijian village on the southern Viti Levu coastline with the reef beyond

Good

The budget mainland option — traditional villages, the Pacific Harbour diving hub, and a 90km coastal road between Nadi and Suva.

The Coral Coast runs along the southern coast of Viti Levu between Nadi and Suva, a 90km stretch of small resorts, traditional Fijian villages, and budget guesthouses facing coral reef. It lacks the drama of the offshore islands but offers something different: accessibility to traditional village life (the Sigatoka River Safari and the Kula Eco Park are here), the surf beaches at Natadola and Sigatoka, and Pacific Harbour — which bills itself as the adventure capital of Fiji and is home to the country's most reputable shark dive (Beqa Lagoon). For budget travellers or those combining Fiji with a driving itinerary, it is the most practical coastal stretch.

What you gain

  • Beqa Lagoon shark dive from Pacific Harbour: the most famous dive in Fiji — a controlled bull shark feed at 30 metres with up to 8 different shark species present, operated by experienced crews who have run the dive safely for decades
  • Sigatoka River Safari: a river safari through traditional Fijian villages in the interior — one of the more genuine village cultural experiences available without a full liveaboard
  • Budget accommodation on the beach: the Coral Coast has the cheapest beachfront guesthouses on Viti Levu — staying right on the water at prices far below Denarau and the Mamanuca resorts

What you sacrifice

  • A car or resort shuttle is essential: the Coral Coast has no meaningful public transport between resorts — without a rental car, you are dependent on resort transport for everything
  • Beach quality is below the island standard: the Coral Coast's beaches are pleasant but the sand is darker and the snorkelling is shallower than the offshore groups — this is mainland Fiji
  • Very limited nightlife or evening entertainment: the Coral Coast resorts are resort-contained — after dinner there is essentially nothing outside your accommodation
