Trade-off

Hilltop village with the best views of Florence — peaceful, historic, and requires a bus.

Fiesole sits 295 metres above Florence on a hill that the Etruscans settled before the Romans arrived in the valley below. Today it's a small hilltop village — ancient Roman theatre, Etruscan ruins, a Romanesque cathedral, villa gardens — that offers the best panoramic view of Florence from above. The No. 7 bus connects it to central Florence in around 25 minutes. It's a genuine alternative base for those who find city noise intolerable, or for day-trippers wanting the most dramatic perspective on the city.

What you gain

  • Uninterrupted panoramic views across the entire Florence basin — the most rewarding vantage point in the area
  • Roman theatre and Etruscan Museum: significant archaeology with almost no crowds compared to the Uffizi
  • Cool hill breezes in summer — a genuine refuge from the 32°C street heat of the city below

What you sacrifice

  • Requires the No. 7 bus for every trip into the city — adds 25–30 minutes each way to all itineraries
  • Almost no nightlife; after dinner the village is quiet by 21:00
  • Limited accommodation options; mostly villa hotels and agriturismo — can be expensive for what you get
