Florence

Hilltop village with the best views of Florence — peaceful, historic, and requires a bus.
Fiesole sits 295 metres above Florence on a hill that the Etruscans settled before the Romans arrived in the valley below. Today it's a small hilltop village — ancient Roman theatre, Etruscan ruins, a Romanesque cathedral, villa gardens — that offers the best panoramic view of Florence from above. The No. 7 bus connects it to central Florence in around 25 minutes. It's a genuine alternative base for those who find city noise intolerable, or for day-trippers wanting the most dramatic perspective on the city.
