Hurghada

The original fishing port town — chaotic souk, cheap shawarma, the only authentic Egyptian neighbourhood on the strip.
The historic centre of Hurghada at the north end of the strip, before the resort age. Dahar souk, the fish market at the harbour, the El Mina mosque, and budget hotels (Sea Star Beau Rivage, Sea Garden) at a fraction of resort prices. The only place to experience anything resembling actual Egypt on this coast.
