Istanbul
Kadıköy

Asian Istanbul at its most liveable — the ferry ride alone is worth it.
Kadıköy is on the Asian side of the Bosphorus and is where younger Istanbul residents have gravitated as European prices have risen. A 20-minute ferry from Karaköy, it has Istanbul's best food market (Kadıköy Bazaar), the finest concentration of independent bars and restaurants in the city, and accommodation significantly cheaper than its European counterparts.

What you gain
- ↑Kadıköy Bazaar — a covered market selling spices, cheese, fish, and produce; more authentic than the Grand Bazaar
- ↑Moda neighbourhood within Kadıköy: seafront park and café strip; genuinely beautiful on weekend mornings
- ↑Bağdat Caddesi — Istanbul's longest shopping street, popular with local rather than tourist shoppers
What you sacrifice
- ↓Every visit to Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu requires a ferry (25 min) or bridge crossing (40+ min in traffic)
- ↓Less convenient for monument-heavy itineraries
- ↓Fewer luxury hotel options; mostly mid-range and apartment-style stays
