The primary dragon island — ranger-guided treks through dry savanna scrub where up to 1,700 Komodo dragons live. More rugged and forested than Rinca, with longer trekking options. Usually reached via day boat from Labuan Bajo (2.5 hours) or liveaboard anchor. The name destination and the centrepiece of any Komodo trip.

What you gain
- ↑Komodo Island has the largest Komodo dragon population of any island in the national park: ranger-guided walks through the dry savanna and mixed forest consistently produce encounters with multiple adult males at distances of 5–15 metres, and the larger body size of Komodo Island specimens (adult males reach 3m, 90kg) is more impressive than elsewhere
- ↑The Pantai Merah (Red Beach) on Komodo Island's eastern coast is one of only seven pink sand beaches in the world: the red colour derives from fragments of red coral mixed with white sand, and the snorkelling directly off the beach through staghorn coral formations is among the finest shallow snorkelling in the national park
- ↑The longer trekking routes on Komodo Island (Medium and Long Trek, 2–3 hours) access the hilltop viewpoints above the island's central range: the panoramic view of Komodo's bays and the adjacent islands from the Poreng Valley lookout is the finest landscape photograph in the national park
What you sacrifice
- ↓The 2.5-hour boat journey from Labuan Bajo means that Komodo Island is at the far end of a day trip: those arriving by standard day boat reach the island around 10am with a 2pm return — the timing is workable but the 2-hour journey time in open water is uncomfortable for those prone to seasickness
- ↓Komodo Island requires a ranger escort at all times: the guided walk format limits the spontaneity of encounters, and rangers prioritise group safety over individual photography positioning
