Lake Como

West-shore village with the lake's best hiking access (Monte Bregagno) and a bus route up to Lugano in Switzerland.
On the west shore at the foot of the Val Menaggio, this is the lake's sportiest base. The 9-hole Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club and trailheads into Monte Bregagno (2107m) are at the door. Bus C12 runs to Lugano in 50 minutes for a Swiss day trip. Lake-frontage is a long flat promenade — easier with strollers than Bellagio's stairs. More year-round than the east shore.
