Kata & Karon

The sensible alternative to Patong — great beaches, decent restaurants, and a calmer atmosphere.
Kata and Karon are the beaches immediately south of Patong and consistently offer the best balance on the island: long stretches of good sand, solid hotel options at all prices, and a restaurant and bar scene that functions without the excess of Bangla Road. Kata Noi (Little Kata) is one of the most beautiful small beaches in Phuket. Kata also has reliable surf in the low season for those who stay when others leave.

What you gain
- ↑Kata Noi beach: a small, sheltered cove with some of the clearest water and least crowded sand on the west coast
- ↑Kata surf: consistent waves in the shoulder season (April–May) attract a surf crowd the rest of the island misses
- ↑Better restaurant-to-tourist ratio than Patong: good Thai food available without fighting through crowds
What you sacrifice
- ↓Further from the airport than Patong — 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic
- ↓Less hotel variety than Patong: fewer budget options, fewer five-star options
- ↓The bar scene is alive but limited — not the destination for a big night out
