Launceston & Tamar Valley

Tasmania's second city — Cataract Gorge a 10-minute walk from the centre, Tamar Valley wines, and Mole Creek cave systems.
Launceston is 200km north of Hobart via the Midlands Highway and is a different proposition from the capital: smaller, quieter, and anchored by the Cataract Gorge — a dramatic river gorge with suspension bridges, chairlift, peacock gardens, and swimming pool just 10 minutes walk from the city centre, making it Australia's most extraordinary inner-urban natural landscape. The Tamar Valley wine region runs 60km north from Launceston to the Bass Strait coast, producing some of Australia's finest cool-climate pinot noir and sparkling wine: Josef Chromy, Pipers Brook, Jansz, and Clover Hill are the benchmark producers. Mole Creek Karst National Park (75km west) has guided cave tours through limestone systems with glowworms.

What you gain
- ↑The Cataract Gorge First Basin is a 10-minute walk from Launceston's central mall: the gorge swimming pool (open in summer), the suspension bridge, and the chairlift across the first basin make this the most distinctive inner-urban natural experience in Australian cities — and it is free to enter
- ↑The Tamar Valley wine road north of Launceston is Tasmania's most developed wine region: Josef Chromy's estate (with its own lake, cellar door, and restaurant) and Jansz Tasmania (Australia's finest sparkling wine producer) are within 25 minutes of the city centre; the circuit takes a full day and can be driven or done by taxi
- ↑Launceston accommodation is significantly cheaper than Hobart — the same standard of boutique guesthouse or heritage hotel costs 20–30% less, and the city is better placed as a base for Cradle Mountain (1.5 hours) than Hobart (2.5 hours)
What you sacrifice
- ↓Launceston has fewer international-standard restaurants and cultural attractions than Hobart — MONA, Salamanca, and the primary food events are all in the south. Those with only one base should weigh Hobart's greater concentration of experiences against Launceston's lower cost and better Cradle Mountain access
- ↓Public transport connections between Launceston and other parts of Tasmania are limited — a car is effectively essential for exploring the Tamar Valley, Mole Creek, or the east coast
