Thessaloniki

The Ottoman-Byzantine quarter inside the old city walls — the only part of Thessaloniki to survive the 1917 fire.
A steep climb up from the centre into narrow lanes, working tavernas, Byzantine churches and the Eptapyrgio fortress walls. This is where locals actually still live and rent stays cheap. Best at sunset for the whole-city-and-gulf view.
