Yogyakarta
Sosrowijayan & Backpacker Area

Budget headquarters — hostels, cheap warungs, and the Yogyakarta train station on your doorstep.
The Sosrowijayan lanes (known locally as Gang 1 and Gang 2) are Yogyakarta's original backpacker zone, sitting just off the northern end of Jalan Malioboro near the main train station. Hostels here are the cheapest in the city, warungs serve reliable local food at street prices, and the concentration of tour operators makes booking Borobudur sunrise trips and Merapi jeep tours easy and competitive. Rough around the edges, but functional and social.

What you gain
- ↑Cheapest accommodation in central Yogyakarta — dorm beds from a few dollars, private rooms affordable
- ↑Train station walkable: easy connections to Solo, Semarang, and the rest of Java
- ↑Tour operator density means Borobudur packages, Merapi jeep tours, and cooking classes are easy to arrange
What you sacrifice
- ↓Grungy alley atmosphere — not the Yogyakarta of boutique hotels and gallery streets
- ↓Persistent touts and tour sellers on the lanes between Malioboro and the hostels
- ↓Not family-friendly; the social scene is very much aimed at solo young travellers
