The historic capital — the magnificent Duomo, ferry hub, and the most connected point on the coast.
Amalfi sits at the geographical and historical heart of the coast: the powerful Maritime Republic that gave this stretch of shoreline its name. The Duomo di Sant'Andrea is one of the finest Norman-Arab-Byzantine cathedrals in Italy, reached by a sweeping staircase from Piazza del Duomo. Ferries connect east and west from the harbour; buses run both directions on the SS163; and the town has the broadest range of accommodation at every price point. It's more functional and more local than Positano, with working shops and a year-round population.

What you gain
- ↑Best transport hub on the coast: ferries east to Salerno and west to Positano and Naples, plus the main bus route — the easiest base for exploring the full coastline
- ↑Duomo di Sant'Andrea: one of the great cathedral complexes in southern Italy — the facade, the cloister, and the Baroque interior are all worth unhurried time
- ↑Widest price range on the coast: budget B&Bs through to four-star hotels within the same small town — more accommodation options than anywhere else
What you sacrifice
- ↓The Piazza del Duomo and waterfront are congested in summer — day-trippers from Naples flood in by ferry and leave Amalfi feeling more like a transit hub than a base
- ↓The beach is a small strip of grey pebbles; for serious beach days, Minori and Maiori to the east are a short bus ride
- ↓Amalfi town lacks the dramatic visual drama of Positano — it's beautiful but less immediately photogenic
