Working ferry-and-cargo port — Soviet apartment blocks, local markets, almost no tourism.
North of the Old Town the boulevard ends and the city becomes a working port — ferry terminal for the Black Sea Ukraine/Bulgaria/Romania routes, cargo cranes, the central bazaar, and rows of Khrushchyovka apartment blocks. Best for budget travellers who want to live cheaply and watch the real city operate; not a tourist neighbourhood.

Ancient Roman fortress, hipster pebble beach, 10km south of Batumi — quieter, edgier, closer to Turkey.
