Batumi
Gonio & South
Unsplash / Unsplash
Ancient Roman fortress, hipster pebble beach, 10km south of Batumi — quieter, edgier, closer to Turkey.
Gonio sits 10km south, with the 1st-century Roman/Byzantine fortress (Apsaros) directly inland of a long pebble beach that has become Batumi's low-key alternative — surf schools, vegan cafés, guesthouses run by Tbilisi expats, fewer high-rises. The Turkish border at Sarpi is another 4km south. Best for younger travellers and beach long-stayers wanting space.
