West Berlin's upscale heart — KaDeWe, the Ku'damm, and Schloss Charlottenburg without the eastern-districts grit.
Charlottenburg is old West Berlin: the Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm) shopping boulevard, the KaDeWe department store (Europe's second largest), and Schloss Charlottenburg's baroque gardens. It's the most conventional-European neighbourhood in Berlin — cleaner, quieter, and more predictably comfortable than Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain, with a strong concentration of international hotels. Visitors who want Berlin's culture without its edginess tend to land here; so do luxury travellers and those attending events at the Olympiastadion.

What you gain
- ↑KaDeWe food hall (6th floor): one of Europe's great food emporiums — 1,300 sq metres of cheese, charcuterie, fish, and prepared food
- ↑Schloss Charlottenburg and its gardens: free to enter the grounds, the most impressive palace complex in Berlin
- ↑Olympiastadion — venue for Lollapalooza, major concerts, and Hertha BSC — a 5-minute walk from the neighbourhood
What you sacrifice
- ↓Berlin's most expensive neighbourhood for accommodation — you're paying for the Ku'damm address, not exceptional value
- ↓Less character than eastern districts; the creative, countercultural Berlin is not present here
- ↓A 30-minute U-Bahn ride to Museum Island and Mitte — the most central sights require a significant transit commitment

Historic Berlin at maximum concentration — Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, and Reichstag all walkable, but tourist density is extreme.
Berlin's multicultural engine — Turkish street food, techno clubs, graffiti art, and the most honest cross-section of the city.
