The medieval heart — the Belfry, Gothic civic buildings, and Flanders's most photographed squares.
The Historic Centre is where Bruges's identity concentrates: the Markt square with its 83-metre Belfry tower (360 steps, UNESCO heritage), the Burg square with the 12th-century Basilica of the Holy Blood and the Gothic city hall, and the canal-side Rozenhoedkaai — the most photographed viewpoint in Belgium. The medieval street grid is entirely car-free and walkable. Living here means 24/7 proximity to everything, but also sharing your doorstep with thousands of day-trippers in high season.

What you gain
- ↑The Groeninge Museum (van Eyck's Madonna with Canon van der Paele, Memling's Moreel Triptych) and the Memling Museum in the Sint-Janshospitaal are both a 5-minute walk — access to two of the great Flemish art collections at any hour.
- ↑Canal boat tours depart from the Dijver quay year-round (boats heated and covered in winter) — the 30-minute circuit through the medieval waterways is the most efficient orientation of the city.
- ↑De Halve Maan Brewery (founded 1564) is a 10-minute walk from the Markt: tours run daily with a tasting of Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik. The underground beer pipeline connecting the brewery to the bottling plant is the only such system in Belgium.
What you sacrifice
- ↓July and August day-tripper volumes make the Markt and Burg squares genuinely difficult to enjoy — the photogenic qualities of the medieval architecture are obscured by tour groups, and queues for the Belfry climb (368 steps) extend to 45 minutes in peak season.
- ↓Accommodation here is the most expensive in Bruges and must be booked many months ahead for summer dates. Restaurants in the immediate tourist centre are the most tourist-priced on the island.

The local commercial square west of the centre — market days, concert hall, and authentic Belgian café life.
The quiet residential quarter east of the Markt — canals without the crowds and a local Bruges life.
The bohemian quarter between the centre and the ring canal — the best beer bars and a quieter pace.
