Trade-off

Busan's second beach — younger crowd, bar-lined shore, and the best view of the illuminated Gwangan Bridge in the city.

Gwangalli Beach is Haeundae's cooler younger sibling: a shorter stretch of sand with a strip of bars, cafés, and restaurants running along the seafront, all facing the illuminated span of Gwangan Bridge across the bay. The evening atmosphere — outdoor tables on the beach promenade, LED-lit bridge reflected in the water, draft beer and Korean fried chicken — is one of the defining Busan experiences. Less overwhelmingly crowded than Haeundae in peak season, and with a more diverse local-to-tourist ratio year-round, Gwangalli has become the neighbourhood of choice for younger Korean visitors and the city's café culture crowd.

What you gain

  • The Gwangan Bridge view from the beach promenade at night: one of the most photogenic urban waterfront scenes in Korea, with the illuminated cable-stayed bridge spanning 7.4km across the bay
  • The best bar strip in Busan: the seafront street behind Gwangalli Beach is lined with outdoor bars, craft beer pubs, and pojangmacha tents that operate until 02:00–03:00
  • Busan International Fireworks Festival (October): Gwangalli is the epicentre of the event, with Gwangan Bridge as the backdrop for 60 minutes of fireworks — the prime viewing spot in the city

What you sacrifice

  • Loud after dark: the bar strip operates at full volume from 21:00 to closing — light sleepers staying close to the waterfront will struggle
  • Smaller beach than Haeundae: the sand is narrower and less expansive; on busy summer weekends it becomes overcrowded more quickly relative to its size
  • Fireworks Festival night: the crowds around Gwangalli for the October fireworks are enormous — transport planning is essential and the area becomes gridlocked for hours after the display
