Trade-off

Rainbow-coloured houses cascading to the sea — the most photographed sunset village and December presepe star.

Manarola is the village that appears on virtually every Cinque Terre poster: the tightly stacked houses in yellow, orange, pink, and red descending from the hill to the rocky harbour in a near-vertical composition. The sunset view from the Nessun Dorma terraced wine bar on the clifftop above the village is the most celebrated viewpoint in the region and books out weeks ahead in season. Manarola also hosts the most elaborate Christmas nativity scene in Italy (the hillside presepe, illuminated November–January) and is where the terraced vineyards above the village are most dramatically visible.

What you gain

  • The finest sunset viewpoint in Cinque Terre: Nessun Dorma wine bar sits on a terrace directly above the village with a 180-degree view over the harbour and coast. Tables on the terrace with a glass of Sciacchetrà at 7pm in September — one of the most beautiful moments available in Italian travel.
  • The December presepe (illuminated hillside nativity scene) is exceptional — running from late November through January 6, over 300 illuminated figures arranged on the cliff face above the village. The view from the Nessun Dorma terrace at night during the presepe period is genuinely spectacular.
  • The walk from Manarola south toward Riomaggiore (the Via dell'Amore, currently under restoration) is the most famous and most accessible section of the coastal trail. The walk north to Corniglia along the high path offers excellent vineyard and sea views.

What you sacrifice

  • The sunset view from the Nessun Dorma terrace is very well known — in high season, reservations must be made days or weeks in advance. Walk-in spots are available at non-sunset times.
  • Like all the villages, Manarola's access involves significant stairs and uneven stone paths. Limited flat walking and no vehicle access within the old village. Swimming from the rocks beside the harbour is possible but the entry points are rough.
