Strøget, Tivoli, and the city's main sights — touristy but unavoidable for a first visit.
Indre By (the Inner City) is the historic core of Copenhagen: Strøget, one of Europe's longest pedestrian shopping streets, runs through its centre, while Tivoli Gardens sits on the southern edge and the Round Tower, Copenhagen Cathedral, and the Latin Quarter occupy its medieval lanes. It is dense with visitors in summer but this is where the city's foundational experiences live — Tivoli at Christmas, the Strøget flagship stores, and the Copenhagen canal boat tours that depart from Gammel Strand. Staying here means paying a premium for the most central address in Denmark.

What you gain
- ↑Tivoli Gardens — walking distance from every Indre By hotel; the world's second-oldest amusement park, with its Christmas market and summer carnival, is the single most iconic Copenhagen experience and only makes full sense if you're close enough to visit twice
- ↑Total walkability to every major sight: Nyhavn, the National Museum, Christiansborg Palace, and the canal boat tour departures are all within 15 minutes on foot; no transit needed for a full sightseeing day
- ↑Strøget and the surrounding streets offer the highest concentration of Danish design shops, classic smørrebrød lunch counters, and the covered Torvehallerne market — the best single-neighbourhood introduction to what Copenhagen does well
What you sacrifice
- ↓The most expensive neighbourhood in Denmark for accommodation: central Indre By hotels carry a significant address premium, and budget options require walking further out or compromising on quality
- ↓Minimal local character in summer: Strøget is dominated by chains and tourist trade; the real Copenhagen café and bar culture lives in Nørrebro and Vesterbro, not here
- ↓Noise and crowds in high season — July and August in the city centre means sharing every sight with European summer tourism at full capacity
