Diani Beach
Shimba Hills National Reserve

Kenya's coastal forest reserve — elephants, sable antelope, and a spectacular waterfall an hour from the beach.
Shimba Hills National Reserve sits 30km inland from Diani Beach and is the only place in Kenya where you can see the rare sable antelope. The reserve is forested rather than savannah — a lush coastal rainforest that supports one of Kenya's highest elephant densities, buffalo, leopard, and the spectacular Sheldrick Falls. Half-day and full-day game drives from Diani are easily arranged, making it the most convenient wildlife addition to a beach trip without flying to the Masai Mara.

What you gain
- ↑Sable antelope — found nowhere else in Kenya; the reserve is a globally significant population stronghold
- ↑High elephant density in a forested setting: very different from savannah game viewing, with close encounters common
- ↑Sheldrick Falls: a full hike to the waterfall through coastal forest is one of the best non-beach day options on the Kenyan coast
What you sacrifice
- ↓Not a base — visited only as a half-day or full-day excursion from Diani Beach (30–45 minutes each way)
- ↓Game viewing quality depends on ranger and timing: early morning departures give significantly better sightings
