Good

The largest island and the most remote inhabited base — Galápagos penguins, volcanoes, and a village that genuinely feels undiscovered.

Isabela is the largest island in the archipelago (4,588 sq km — larger than all other Galápagos islands combined) and one of the world's most geologically active volcanic landscapes. Its six shield volcanoes — including Wolf Volcano (1,707m), the archipelago's highest point — are each an independent ecosystem. Puerto Villamil (population 2,500) is the main settlement: a small fishing village with flamingo lagoons at walking distance, Galápagos penguins swimming in the harbour, and a relaxed pace that Santa Cruz lost to tourism infrastructure a decade ago. Access from Baltra requires a 2.5-hour ferry from Santa Cruz.

What you gain

  • Galápagos penguins at the Tintoreras islets (15-minute boat ride from Puerto Villamil): the only place in the archipelago where penguins and marine iguanas share the same volcanic lava shoreline, with snorkelling among penguins in the adjacent bays
  • The Sierra Negra Volcano hike (11km return, 900m elevation, guided only): the world's second-largest volcanic crater (9km diameter), with the option to continue to the Volcán Chico lava field for views across the western archipelago — the most dramatic landscape in the islands
  • Puerto Villamil village character: flamingos in the lagoons behind the beach, sea turtles nesting on the 4km beachfront, and accommodation at 20–30% below Santa Cruz rates in guesthouses run by fishing families who grew up on the island

What you sacrifice

  • Access requires a 2.5-hour ferry crossing from Santa Cruz (USD 30 each way) that can be rough in the cool season — transfers must be planned around ferry schedules (typically 06:00 and 14:30 departures)
  • Day-trip options from Isabela are more limited than from Santa Cruz: Fernandina Island is accessible from Isabela but the overall range of accessible sites is smaller
