Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Lagoon, and the cruise ship stop that became Jamaica's adventure tourism capital.
Ocho Rios sits on Jamaica's north coast midway between Montego Bay and Port Antonio and is defined by two things: it is the busiest cruise ship port in Jamaica (receiving 500,000+ visitors per year), and it sits closest to the island's most spectacular natural attractions. Dunn's River Falls — a 180-metre stepped waterfall that visitors climb in a chain from ocean to top — is the most-visited natural attraction in Jamaica and can be chaotic on cruise ship days. The Blue Lagoon at nearby Port Antonio (actually 37km east) is among the Caribbean's most beautiful bodies of water: a 55-metre deep azure freshwater spring meeting the sea, accessible by boat. Mystic Mountain adventure park, Bob Marley's Nine Mile birthplace and mausoleum (90 minutes inland), and the Shaw Park Botanical Gardens round out an activity offer that is the most diverse of any Jamaican region.

What you gain
- ↑Dunn's River Falls is the most iconic Jamaica experience outside of reggae and rum — the 180-metre climb up the naturally stepped limestone waterfall with a guide chain is remarkable; visit at 8:30am opening before the cruise ships arrive (from 10am) for the uncrowded version of the experience
- ↑Nine Mile (St. Ann's Parish) — Bob Marley's birthplace and mausoleum: the hilltop community in Jamaica's interior where Marley was born, lived, and is buried is a genuine pilgrimage site rather than a tourist production; the guided tour of the Rasta community and the small museum is emotional and authentic
- ↑Blue Lagoon, Port Antonio: the extraordinary azure freshwater spring (55m deep, 75% freshwater/25% saltwater) at the edge of the sea is among the most beautiful spots in the Caribbean; accessible by boat from Port Antonio and best visited early morning before the day tour boats arrive
What you sacrifice
- ↓Cruise ship days at Ocho Rios: when 2–3 ships are in port simultaneously (typically Tuesday–Thursday in peak season), the town and Dunn's River Falls become overwhelmed with 5,000–10,000 day visitors; check the cruise schedule and arrive at all attractions at opening time or plan the town visit for days with no ships
- ↓The beach at Ocho Rios town is not Jamaica's finest — Turtle Beach and Mallards Beach are adequate but not exceptional; the best beaches near Ocho Rios are the private hotel beaches (Sandals, Couples resorts) or the quieter Boscobel Beach further east
