Trade-off

The island's main tourist strip — a 6km curve of white sand backed by hotels, bars, and restaurants.

Chaweng is Koh Samui's centre of gravity: a long, palm-lined beach where international resort hotels sit beside budget guesthouses, and the main street behind the sand is an almost continuous line of restaurants, bars, and tour agencies. It has the widest range of accommodation, the best nightlife, and the most consistent beach-club scene on the island. The trade-off is that it is the most crowded area by a significant margin, and the commercial atmosphere is total — expect hawkers, tuk-tuks, and tourist-market pricing on everything.

What you gain

  • Widest selection of accommodation at every price point, from budget guesthouses to five-star beachfront
  • The island's most active nightlife: Green Mango and Ark Bar run until dawn during high season
  • Best connectivity to ferries, tours, and airport transfers — everything departs from or passes through Chaweng

What you sacrifice

  • Most crowded beach on the island — high season sunbed space is competitive
  • Heavily commercialised: authentic Thai culture is almost entirely absent from the main strip
  • Noise from bars and clubs is audible at most accommodation within 500m of the beach road
