Across the river from Kazimierz — Schindler's Factory, the old Jewish Ghetto, and a neighbourhood finding its identity.
Podgórze was the Jewish Ghetto established by the Nazi occupation from 1941; the remaining section of Ghetto Wall, the Pharmacy Under the Eagle, and above all Schindler's Factory — now a Museum of Kraków's wartime occupation — make it one of the most historically important areas in the city. The neighbourhood is gentrifying steadily: independent cafés, studios, and a growing arts community are establishing around Plac Bohaterów Getta (Ghetto Heroes Square), with its haunting installation of empty chairs. It lacks the critical mass of Kazimierz's bar and restaurant scene, but offers a quieter, more residential base with genuine character and less tourist saturation.

What you gain
- ↑Schindler's Factory Museum (at Lipowa 4) is the finest museum in Kraków — a serious, intelligent account of the Nazi occupation told through the factory site itself; cannot be experienced without being in Podgórze
- ↑Plac Bohaterów Getta with its empty chairs memorial is one of the most affecting public spaces in Europe; the immediate neighbourhood is walkable and increasingly well-served by independent cafés
- ↑Genuinely lower prices than Kazimierz or the Old Town, with a growing local scene that feels earned rather than manufactured for tourists
What you sacrifice
- ↓Lacks the critical mass of restaurants and nightlife that Kazimierz offers; an evening out typically requires crossing back over the river
- ↓The neighbourhood's gentrification is uneven; some blocks feel genuinely vibrant, others are still quiet residential streets without much visitor infrastructure
- ↓Less immediately beautiful than the Old Town or the photogenic buildings of Kazimierz; Podgórze rewards visitors who are engaged in its history rather than its aesthetics
