Lalibela
Eastern Cluster
Unsplash / Unsplash
Three atmospheric churches connected by underground tunnels — less visited, more ancient in feeling.
The eastern cluster — Bete Amanuel, Bete Merkorios, and Bete Abba Libanos — lies a short walk from the northern group and is noticeably less trafficked. Bete Amanuel is considered the finest example of the Aksumite architectural style among all eleven churches, with precisely rendered pilasters and cornices. An underground tunnel links Bete Merkorios to the northern cluster and is a dramatic passage in its own right. This area rewards early risers who explore after the northern cluster groups have moved on.

What you gain
- ↑Bete Amanuel is widely regarded by architects as the finest of all eleven churches — the Aksumite detailing is extraordinary
- ↑Underground tunnel connecting to the northern cluster is a dramatic and atmospheric route
- ↑Far fewer tour groups reach this cluster — a far more contemplative experience than the northern churches
What you sacrifice
- ↓Requires a separate walk or short drive from the main northern cluster — easy to skip on a rushed one-day itinerary
