Trade-off

Lima's port district reimagined — the Monumental Callao street art project and La Punta's ceviche by the water.

Callao, Lima's historic port district 12km west of Miraflores, has undergone a remarkable cultural transformation in its Monumental section — a formerly derelict area of port-city buildings that since 2015 has become the site of one of the largest street art projects in Latin America, with over 300 international and Peruvian muralists transforming the entire neighbourhood into an open-air gallery. La Punta, the narrow peninsula at the southern tip of Callao, remains a traditional fishing community with excellent waterfront cevicherías and the best fresh fish in Lima. The combination of urban art, maritime heritage, and seafood culture makes Callao one of the most interesting day trips from Miraflores.

What you gain

  • Monumental Callao (the revitalised arts district centred on Av. Manco Cápac and the surrounding blocks) is one of South America's most ambitious urban art projects — the scale of the murals (some covering entire 5-storey building facades), the quality of the artists involved (including internationally exhibited names alongside Peruvian community artists), and the neighbourhood transformation story make it a genuinely compelling urban destination. The Fugaz gallery within the Monumental district has exhibition programming and a rooftop bar with port views.
  • La Punta's fish market and waterfront cevicherías serve the freshest ceviche in Lima at the lowest prices — proximity to the catch means ingredients are at zero transport distance, and the modest neighbourhood restaurants charge PEN 20–35 for a full ceviche lunch that would cost three times as much in Miraflores. La Punta's walking path along the narrow peninsula tip, with views across the Pacific anchorage, is one of Lima's best low-key outdoor experiences.
  • The Real Felipe Fortress (Fortaleza del Real Felipe, Callao) is one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial military fortifications in South America — the 18th-century stone fort played roles in the wars of independence and the War of the Pacific, and guided tours provide context for Lima's colonial and republican history that the Miraflores museum circuit doesn't offer.

What you sacrifice

  • Callao requires a taxi or ride-share from Miraflores (20–30 minutes, PEN 30–45 depending on traffic) — it is not a walking or transit-friendly destination from the main tourist districts. Visitors need to plan a deliberate Callao excursion rather than stumbling upon it.
  • The Monumental Callao and La Punta areas are safe for visitors, but Callao proper has significantly higher crime rates than Miraflores and San Isidro — navigating with awareness and sticking to the defined tourist zones is important. Guided tours of Monumental Callao are available and recommended for first-time visitors.
