The oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon — fado, viewpoints, and steep cobbled lanes.
Alfama is Lisbon's most iconic neighbourhood: a Moorish maze of tiled houses, laundry lines, and miradouros overlooking the Tagus. It's genuinely beautiful but no longer a secret — the streets closest to São Jorge Castle are heavily touristed. Go deeper into the maze and you'll still find old ladies on stoops and fado drifting from basement restaurants.

What you gain
- ↑Miradouro da Graça and Portas do Sol — the best sunset viewpoints in the city, a short walk from any hotel
- ↑Authentic fado houses on side streets away from the castle — easier to find than anywhere else in Lisbon
- ↑Feira da Ladra flea market (Tuesday and Saturday) within walking distance — one of Europe's best
What you sacrifice
- ↓Extremely steep and cobbled — hard on knees and impractical with luggage or pushchairs
- ↓The most tourist-dense neighbourhood in Lisbon; harder to find genuinely local restaurants near the castle
- ↓Limited public transport access — trams are scenic but slow and often packed
