Baixa Lisbon — Praça do Comércio and the Tagus waterfront

Trade-off

The commercial centre — convenient, flat, and squarely on the tourist belt.

Baixa is Lisbon's Pombaline grid: wide streets, grand squares, and the most convenient location in the city. Everything is walkable — the riverfront, the funiculars up to Bairro Alto, Alfama to the east. It's not the most atmospheric place to stay but for first-timers or short trips, the central location is hard to argue with.

Centrality

What you gain

  • Perfectly flat — the only neighbourhood in Lisbon you can navigate comfortably with a pushchair or heavy luggage
  • Maximum transport connectivity: Rossio station, multiple Métro lines, and all major tram routes
  • Praça do Comércio riverfront — the grandest public space in Lisbon, five minutes walk

What you sacrifice

  • The most tourist-saturated neighbourhood — souvenir shops dominate the ground floor retail
  • Almost no local life; residents of Lisbon generally don't live or socialise here
  • Loud with traffic and tour groups during the day; oddly dead in the evenings
