Trade-off

The largest and liveliest Gili — car-free coral island with world-class diving and a beach party scene.

Gili Trawangan ('Gili T') is the largest of the three Gili Islands: 3km long, car and motorbike-free (horse carts and bicycles only), and the most developed tropical island experience in the region. The western beach is lined with beach bars, swing bars, and diving schools (Blue Marlin Dive, Manta Dive are the main operators); the eastern side faces the ocean and the volcanic cone of Lombok's Rinjani. The snorkelling circuit around the island takes about 2 hours and encounters hawksbill turtles on almost every lap.

What you gain

  • The Gili T dive scene is one of the best-value diving environments in the world: PADI Open Water certification courses cost approximately USD 350–400 (vs USD 600+ in Bali or Thailand), and the dive sites include the hauntingly beautiful underwater Sivalingam (submerged Hindu sculpture at 15m depth), the Shark Point current dive, and the turtle-rich shallows of the northern reef.
  • The bioluminescent plankton experience off Gili Trawangan's north beach (June-October, moonless nights) is extraordinary: swimming in water that flashes blue-green light with every movement, surrounded by darkness, is one of the most disorienting and beautiful natural experiences in Southeast Asia.
  • The no-motorised-vehicle policy creates an atmosphere unlike any other resort island: the only sounds on the beach at sunrise are waves, birdsong, and the call to prayer from the mosque at the island's centre. Walking from the beach party strip to a deserted beach in 10 minutes is possible even in peak season.

What you sacrifice

  • Gili T's beach party reputation is real and can be jarring: the south end of the western beach hosts regular music events from 10pm, and the ambient noise from the main strip bars carries surprisingly far across the island. Light sleepers should choose accommodation on the quieter eastern side.
  • The island's infrastructure is tested in peak season (July-August): waste management, fresh water supply, and the horse cart system all strain under the volume of visitors. The lagoon near the main pier can accumulate plastic in certain wind conditions.
