The south coast surf bay — completely different from Bali's Kuta, with wild beaches and a developing scene.
Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with Kuta Bali) sits in a bay on the island's south coast: a crescent of white sand, turquoise water, and headlands that divide into a series of adjacent bays (Selong Belanak to the west, Mawun and Tampah further along). The surf break at the main Kuta beach is suitable for beginners to intermediates, with more serious waves at nearby Mawi (left-hander) and Gerupuk (multiple breaks inside a protected bay, ideal for all levels). The town is small, the restaurant scene is improving, and the atmosphere is years behind Bali's tourist development — which is entirely the point.

What you gain
- ↑Gerupuk bay is the finest beginner-to-intermediate surf destination in the Lombok region: boat access to multiple breaks inside a protected bay, lessons available from the local Sasak surfing community (approximately USD 20 per 2-hour lesson including boat transfer), and conditions that are manageable and well-suited to progression. Experienced surfers can access the outside reef breaks beyond the bay headland.
- ↑The beach road west from Kuta to Selong Belanak (15km by motorbike, 20 minutes) passes through a series of bays of increasing emptiness and beauty: Mawun is a perfect horseshoe bay with calm swimming water, Tampah is barely developed, and Selong Belanak has the longest crescent of sand in Lombok with a surf school and a single restaurant. The entire circuit is achievable in a morning.
- ↑The Bau Nyale festival (February-March) is staged at Seger Beach, 3km east of Kuta: the gathering of tens of thousands of Sasak people to catch nyale sea worms before dawn is one of Indonesia's most extraordinary indigenous cultural events, and Kuta Lombok is the base for attending it.
What you sacrifice
- ↓Kuta Lombok's infrastructure is still developing: the restaurant scene is good but limited to perhaps 15 reliable options, the accommodation quality varies widely, and the road surface on the connecting routes to the best beaches is uneven in places. A scooter rental is essential — there is no public transport.
- ↓It's genuinely remote: the nearest significant town (Praya) is 30km away, the airport (Lombok International) is 45km, and the nearest Gili boat connection is from Bangsal on the northwest coast, a 1.5-hour drive. Kuta Lombok works as a base for the south coast but requires commitment and a vehicle.
