The Sunset Strip, West Hollywood's LGBTQ+ identity, and the best hotel bar scene in LA.
West Hollywood (WeHo) is a 1.9-square-mile independent city within the City of Los Angeles — it incorporated separately in 1984, partly to formalise protections for its large LGBTQ+ community. The Sunset Strip (1.5 miles of entertainment venues from Crescent Heights to Doheny Drive) is WeHo's commercial spine: live music venues, the Chateau Marmont, the Comedy Store, and rooftop bars on boutique hotels stack up along what was once the most famous entertainment mile in America. Santa Monica Boulevard is WeHo's Pride corridor and the heart of its nightlife.

What you gain
- ↑The Sunset Strip's live music and comedy heritage is still active: the Whisky a Go Go (opened 1964, launched the Doors and Van Halen among hundreds of others), the Roxy Theatre, and the Comedy Store are all operating. The Comedy Store in particular — with its unannounced drop-in sets from major comedians — is one of the best live comedy experiences in the US for under $20.
- ↑West Hollywood's hotel rooftop bar scene is the best in LA. The 1 Hotel West Hollywood (rooftop pool and bar with 360-degree city views), the Mondrian's Sky Bar (one of the pioneering Hollywood rooftop venues), and the Jeremy West Hollywood are all within a 10-minute walk. The density of world-class hotel bars in a walkable radius is unmatched anywhere else in LA.
- ↑West Hollywood Pride (mid-June) is one of the largest Pride events in the US, drawing over 100,000 participants to the Santa Monica Boulevard corridor. The Rainbow District — the blocks of Santa Monica Boulevard between San Vicente and La Cienega — has a year-round community atmosphere with LGBTQ+-owned bars, restaurants, and shops.
What you sacrifice
- ↓West Hollywood is expensive at every price point. Hotels run $200–$500/night for mid-range properties on or near the Strip; restaurant bills at dinner regularly exceed $80–$120 per person with drinks. The neighbourhood has almost no budget accommodation options.
- ↓The Sunset Strip can be very loud on weekend nights — the proximity of live venues, clubs, and bars means noise levels in nearby accommodation are a real consideration. Check the specific street of any hotel before booking if noise is a concern.
