Budget Maldives — guesthouses, local life, and a fraction of the resort prices.
The Maldives legalized guesthouse tourism in 2009 and the local island scene has grown significantly since. Maafushi (South Malé Atoll), Fuvahmulah, and others offer genuine Maldivian community life, bikini beaches, and accommodation starting from $50/night. Alcohol is available on designated bikini beaches only. This is the Maldives that most visitors don't know exists.

What you gain
- ↑Fraction of resort prices — guesthouse accommodation at $50-150/night instead of $500-5000/night
- ↑Genuine Maldivian community life; local restaurants, mosques, and day-to-day island routines visible
- ↑Easy access to snorkelling, diving, and excursions at local market rates rather than resort markups
What you sacrifice
- ↓No alcohol on the island itself; designated bikini beaches are limited and sometimes crowded
- ↓No resort amenities: no overwater villa, no private beach, no spa infrastructure
- ↓The Maldives fantasy (private pool, empty beach, sunset cocktail) does not exist here; this is a different experience
