The long pedestrianised spine of the city — where local Plovdiv shops, eats and moves through its day.
Knyaz Aleksandar I Street (universally known as "the Main Street") is a 1.5km car-free boulevard connecting the Central Post Office to the foot of the Old Town. It is the commercial and civic heart of modern Plovdiv: chain stores and local boutiques, the central mosque (Dzhumaya Djamiya) with its Roman Stadium ruins directly in front, good mid-range restaurants and the city's liveliest street scene. It is not romantic in the way the Old Town is, but staying here means easy walking distance to both the Old Town to the east and Kapana directly to the north, with better-value accommodation than either. The tram and main bus lines both serve the boulevard.

What you gain
- ↑The most convenient location in Plovdiv: Old Town, Kapana and the transport hub all within 10 minutes' walk
- ↑Roman Stadium ruins are embedded directly in the pedestrian boulevard — a remarkable piece of archaeology you walk past daily
- ↑Best value-for-centrality accommodation in the city; mid-range hotels significantly cheaper than Old Town boutiques
What you sacrifice
- ↓No atmosphere of its own after 9pm — the street empties when Kapana and the Old Town come alive
- ↓Accommodation tends toward business hotels and standard chains rather than character stays
