Ipanema is the neighbourhood that made Rio famous internationally: the beach backed by the Dois Irmãos mountains, the world-class bikini culture, and streets of restaurants and bars that operate at a genuinely high level. It's more residential and less chaotic than Copacabana — the buildings are lower, the streets are calmer, and the beach section is generally considered the best in the city.
