Edge of the ecological reserve — cactus gardens, birdsong, and a more contemplative SMA experience.
El Charco del Ingenio is SMA's botanical garden and ecological reserve, a 70-hectare zone of native Mexican plants, canyon trails, and migratory birdlife on the city's northern edge. The surrounding neighbourhood has developed quietly around this asset: rental houses and small guesthouses where visitors who want morning hikes, silence, and a slower pace choose to base. It's the anti-centro — genuinely peaceful, with some of the most dramatic views over the valley, but requiring transport to reach the historic core.

What you gain
- ↑El Charco del Ingenio reserve: morning walks among giant cacti, canyon trails, and excellent birdwatching at dawn
- ↑Dramatically quieter than any other area of SMA — appropriate for meditation retreats, yoga, or simply decompressing
- ↑Some of the best panoramic views over the city and surrounding Guanajuato landscape
What you sacrifice
- ↓A 25–30 minute walk to the centro — or require a taxi or Uber for evening dinners; no reliable bus
- ↓Almost no nearby restaurants, bars, or shops; self-catering or transport-dependent for meals
- ↓Not suited to those with mobility issues — trails and surrounding streets are uneven
