Sarajevo
Grbavica & Novo Sarajevo

Frontline neighbourhood of the 1992-95 siege — socialist apartment blocks, raw local life, no tourists.
Grbavica sat directly on the siege frontline; today the apartment blocks still carry shell scars but the neighbourhood lives a fully local rhythm — pekare (bakeries), kids playing in courtyards, Sunday markets at Mojmilo, and tram-line 1 running through to the centre in 12 minutes. Best for travellers who want to see Sarajevo without the bazaar veneer, and for understanding how the city actually rebuilt.
