Trade-off

Scandinavian fishing village roots, the Sunday farmers market, and Discovery Park's wild bluff trails above Puget Sound.

Ballard was settled by Scandinavian fishermen in the late 19th century and has retained more of that heritage character than most Seattle neighbourhoods — the Nordic Heritage Museum, the working fishing docks at Shilshole Bay, and the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (where you can watch salmon negotiate the fish ladder in season) are all here. The Sunday farmers market on Ballard Avenue is the best in Seattle. Discovery Park, adjacent to the west, is 534 acres of wild bluffs, forest, and beach at the edge of Puget Sound — the best urban park in the Pacific Northwest.

What you gain

  • Ballard Sunday Farmers Market: year-round, rain or shine, with local produce, seafood, and the best cinnamon rolls in the city
  • Hiram Chittenden Locks: watch boats transition between saltwater and freshwater — the salmon fish ladder is remarkable in season (Jul–Sep)
  • Discovery Park bluffs and West Point Lighthouse: 534 acres of genuine wilderness 20 minutes from downtown

What you sacrifice

  • 6–7 miles from downtown Seattle — requires a bus or car for central sightseeing; not a base for Pike Place convenience
  • Limited transit frequency compared to Capitol Hill or South Lake Union
  • Fewer restaurant options than the centre; dining out requires knowing where to go
