Trade-off

The self-proclaimed centre of the universe — hipster Fremont troll, Sunday market, and Gasworks Park on Lake Union.

Fremont declared itself the "centre of the universe" and largely lives up to the billing: the neighbourhood's famous troll sculpture under the Aurora Bridge, the Sunday farmers market, the Lenin statue, and the Theo Chocolate factory give it a personality unlike anywhere else in Seattle. Queen Anne to the south is the elevated residential district with some of the city's finest views of downtown, Puget Sound, and Mt Rainier on clear days. Together they form the most liveable and locally distinctive part of Seattle west of Capitol Hill.

What you gain

  • Fremont Sunday Market: craft vendors, vintage clothes, and the best people-watching in Seattle
  • Gasworks Park on Lake Union: views of the city skyline across the water, kayak rentals, and July 4th fireworks from the hill
  • Queen Anne hilltop views of Mt Rainier and Puget Sound — the best clear-day panorama in the city

What you sacrifice

  • 20–25 minutes from Pike Place Market on foot; a bus or bike ride from the central sights
  • Limited hotel options — mostly small B&Bs and apartments; major hotel chains are absent
  • Fremont's quirky charm can feel self-conscious; the neighbourhood's reputation precedes it
