Siem Reap Riverside — a French colonial building facade in Siem Reap town, cream rendered walls and ornate balustrade typical of the riverside colonial district

Good

French colonial architecture along the river — quieter, more refined, and 5 minutes from Pub Street.

The Riverside district runs along the Siem Reap River north and south of the central bridge, and it retains more colonial character than the Pub Street zone: French-era shophouses converted into boutique hotels and restaurants, tree-lined streets that actually feel pleasant to walk at dusk, and a dining scene oriented toward quality rather than volume. It sits between Pub Street (a 5-minute walk south) and the quieter Wat Bo residential area (north), which gives it the best of both: accessible when you want it, escapable when you don't. The night market runs along the riverbank at the bridge.

What you gain

  • The quietest base with Pub Street access: a 5-minute walk south connects to everything commercial, but the Riverside itself is calm enough for early mornings and Angkor-tired afternoons
  • Better restaurant quality than Pub Street: the Riverside's smaller properties compete on food quality rather than volume, and some of Siem Reap's best Khmer restaurants are here
  • Colonial architecture: the French-era buildings converted into guesthouses give the Riverside genuine character that Pub Street's concrete guesthouses lack

What you sacrifice

  • Slightly more expensive accommodation than the Pub Street core: the boutique guesthouse character comes at a modest premium over the volume budget guesthouses
  • Less immediate social scene: for solo travellers who want to meet people easily, Pub Street's concentration is superior
  • Some areas flood during heavy monsoon rain — the riverside location means the street-level can be ankle-deep water in September–October

Best for

couples who want Angkor access without the Pub Street party atmosphere outside their doorthose on stays of 4+ days who want a quieter daily base to return to after temple daystravellers who want slightly better restaurant and accommodation quality at a modest premium

Avoid if

solo travellers whose primary goal is meeting other travellers — Pub Street delivers this far more efficientlythose on tight budgets where the budget guesthouses of the Pub Street zone make more sense
