Kaliurang & Merapi Slope

Cool highland retreat — volcanic viewpoints, lava jeep tours, and an escape from the lowland heat.
Kaliurang sits at 900m on the southern slope of Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta's active volcano, about 25km north of the city. The elevation brings a significant drop in temperature — a genuine relief after the lowland humidity — and the area is the base for Merapi jeep tours: pre-dawn lava field drives that take you through eruption debris fields to sunrise viewpoints. It's a day trip from Yogya for most visitors, but small guesthouses make an overnight stay worthwhile.
