The backpacker and balloon hub — cave hotels, the Open-Air Museum, and the best budget-to-mid-range base in Cappadocia.
Göreme is Cappadocia's most visited village and the natural base for most first-time visitors: the Göreme Open-Air Museum (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a 10-minute walk from the centre, the balloon launch field is immediately outside town, and the highest concentration of cave hotels, hostels, restaurants, and tour operators is all within a 15-minute walking radius. The town itself is carved into the same volcanic tuff as the surrounding fairy chimneys — guesthouses burrow directly into the rock, and the rooftop terraces that overlook the valleys are among the most photographed positions in Turkey. Göreme's compactness makes it walkable in a way that Ürgüp and Avanos are not, and it remains the easiest single base for visitors who want access to all the main attractions without a car.

What you gain
- ↑The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a 10-minute walk from the town centre — the rock-cut Byzantine churches with 11th-century frescoes (Karanlık Kilise's crucifixion scenes, Elmalı Kilise's painted domes) are among the finest examples of early Christian art accessible anywhere; arrive at 8am opening to beat the tour groups
- ↑Cave hotel terraces in Göreme offer the best balloon-watching positions of any town in Cappadocia — sipping breakfast coffee as 100+ balloons launch from the field below and drift silently over the valleys is the morning experience that defines the destination
- ↑The most complete concentration of practical traveller infrastructure in Cappadocia: ATMs, rental scooters, day-trip booking offices, restaurants at all price points, and the most frequent minibus connections to Kayseri and Nevşehir airports
What you sacrifice
- ↓Göreme is the most tourist-dense town in Cappadocia and has limited local character as a result — the main street is lined with tour operator offices and souvenir shops, and in peak season (June–September) the town has the feel of a well-organised tourist trap rather than a living Anatolian village
- ↓The proximity to the balloon launch field means 5am noise on balloon days — not a problem if you're launching yourself, but disruptive for those who are not; cave rooms help with sound insulation but lighter sleepers will notice the activity
