Cook Islands

One of the world's most beautiful lagoons — turquoise heart-shaped water, motu islets, One Foot Island.
Aitutaki is a 30-minute flight north of Rarotonga and the principal reason most travellers come to the Cook Islands. The lagoon is heart-shaped, shallow, and an almost hallucinatory shade of turquoise — ringed by uninhabited motu (sand islets) draped in coconut palms. One Foot Island (Tapuaetai), only reachable by boat, is the postcard image of the Pacific. Accommodation is limited and books months ahead; the island is best visited on a day trip if staying in Rarotonga.
