Dubrovnik
Old Town (Stari Grad)

Inside the walls — the most beautiful medieval town on the Adriatic, and the most crowded.
Dubrovnik's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage walled city that genuinely deserves the attention it receives: the limestone streets, the Stradun pedestrian boulevard, the city walls, and the view from Fort Lovrijenac are among Europe's great urban experiences. The trade-off is that the Old Town has been almost entirely consumed by tourism — overnight accommodation, cruise ship daytrippers, and Game of Thrones pilgrims fill the streets. It's magical in the evening when the day crowds leave.

What you gain
- ↑Dubrovnik city walls: a 2km walk on top of the medieval fortifications is one of the great travel experiences
- ↑Stradun at dawn: the main boulevard before the cruise ships arrive is extraordinary
- ↑Adriatic restaurants and wine bars within the walls; the setting elevates even average food
What you sacrifice
- ↓The most expensive accommodation in Croatia for often the smallest rooms in the country
- ↓Cruise ship hours (10am–6pm) make the Old Town genuinely unpleasant to navigate
- ↓Steep steps throughout; mobility issues and heavy luggage are a real challenge
