Top pick
Just outside the western gate — the practical alternative with the same views at lower prices.
Pile is the neighbourhood immediately outside the Old Town's main western gate and is where most visitors who aren't paying Old Town premium end up. A 5-minute walk from the Pile Gate puts you inside the walls; the accommodation is newer and more spacious; the prices are significantly lower. Boninovo above has residential streets and some of the best views of the Old Town from the coastal path.

What you sacrifice
- ↓Not the "sleeping inside the walls" experience — a trade-off some visitors feel acutely
