Kauai Hawaii — the dramatic fluted sea cliffs of the Na Pali Coast rising from the turquoise Pacific on the Garden Isle

Good

The Garden Isle — the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, Hanalei Bay, and the most untouched landscape in Hawaii.

Kauai is the oldest and arguably most beautiful of the main Hawaiian islands — 97% of the island is inaccessible by road, and the Na Pali Coast's 17-mile run of fluted sea cliffs rising 1,200 metres from the ocean is the most dramatic coastal scenery in the United States. The island receives more rainfall than any other (particularly the north shore, where Mount Waialeale is one of the wettest spots on Earth at 10,000mm annually), which produces a landscape of extraordinary lushness: Waimea Canyon (the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific"), the Hanalei Valley taro fields, and the accessible Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast are all genuinely world-class. Kauai has deliberately limited large-scale hotel development — no building can be taller than a coconut palm.

What you gain

  • Na Pali Coast is the most scenically dramatic coastline accessible in the US — boat tours along the 17-mile stretch of fluted green sea cliffs are available from Hanalei or Port Allen and include sea cave entries, spinner dolphin pods, and monk seal sightings; the Kalalau Trail (11 miles one-way) is one of America's finest hikes
  • Waimea Canyon State Park offers canyon scenery entirely unlike the rest of Hawaii — a 16km-long canyon reaching 1,097m depth with reddish volcanic rock layers, lookout points, and hiking trails that feel more like Utah than the Pacific
  • The north shore (Hanalei, Princeville) is the most beautiful and least commercially developed corner of any Hawaiian island: Hanalei Bay's crescent beach, the pier fishing scene, and the taro-field valley backed by fluted peaks are everything the Hawaii postcard suggests without the Waikiki crowds

What you sacrifice

  • Kauai's north shore receives the most rainfall in the Hawaiian islands — the Hanalei area can see sustained cloudy and rainy spells lasting days, particularly in winter; the south and west coasts (Poipu, Waimea) are dramatically drier, but visitors based in Hanalei should expect rain as part of the experience
  • Kauai has no direct flights from most mainland US cities and requires a connection through Honolulu or Maui — this adds time and cost to any itinerary, making Kauai typically a second or third island added to a longer Hawaiian trip rather than a solo destination
