Higashi Chaya District

Japan's largest preserved geisha district — machiya townhouses, ochaya teahouses, and gold leaf shops.
Higashi Chaya is the largest surviving geisha entertainment district in Japan outside Kyoto, a grid of traditional machiya wooden townhouses along the Asano River that has operated continuously since the early 19th century. Unlike Kyoto's Gion, Higashi Chaya remains genuinely active: ochaya teahouses still host geisha performances, and the ground floors of many machiya have been converted into gold leaf craft shops, matcha cafes, and small galleries without losing their architectural integrity. The area is best experienced at the edges of the day — dawn reveals the district before tourist arrivals, and early evening (5–6pm) offers occasional glimpses of geiko on their way to engagements.

What you gain
- ↑The best-preserved geisha streetscape in Japan outside Kyoto's Gion — the Higashiyama Higashi-machi main lane at dawn is one of the most beautiful urban views in the country
- ↑Gold leaf craft shops and ochaya teahouses open to visitors: the chance to purchase the finest gold leaf work in Japan (Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan's supply) directly from specialist artisans
- ↑Proximity to Omicho Market and the Asano River walks: the district sits within easy walking distance of the city's other heritage areas and is the most atmospheric place to base an itinerary
What you sacrifice
- ↓Bus-only access from the city centre and Kanazawa Station — no rail link means getting here requires planning around bus schedules or taxi fares
- ↓The main street is heavily visited between 10am and 4pm; the district's intimacy is only genuine at the start and end of the day
